Alzheimer symptomsA new study found that Alzheimer’s disease can start to develop at a very early age. A research published in the journal Lancet Neurology argues that those affected by familial Alzheimer start to suffer deteriorations in their brain at 18 years of age. ”The brain changes begin many years before the clinical onset of Alzheimer’s disease” one of the doctors involved in the research told the BBC.

Higher levels of a protein called beta-amyloid were also found. The protein is present in the liquid in which the brain and the spinal cord bathe.

According to previous researches, the symptoms’ first diseases can be detected in a person’s brain up to 15 years before dementia begins to surface. Doctors believe that when the first signs of Alzheimer appear, patients cannot be treated as up to a fifth of the brain’s cells are already gone.

The decline of a patient’s cognitive functions become relevant over time and the study found that people diagnosed with familial Alzheimer usually get hit by the disease in their 40s.
